The transistor was invented by Bell Labs in 1948. Applications in consumer devices followed within a few years after that.
The Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT) was invented by three scientists, William Shockley, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain, in 1948. They all worked at Bell Labs, and were trying to find something to replace the bulky and heat wasting vacuum tubes. They had been pursuing a Field Effect Transistor (FET) based on copper oxide when they stumbled upon a very different amplifying effect produced by closely-spaced metal contacts touching Germanium semiconductor. They won the Nobel Prize in Physics for their work in 1956. When the Bell Labs scientists continued to investigate a possible FET transistor, they discovered that one of these had already been patented by Physicist J. Edgar Lilienfeld. Lilienfeld's insulated-gate FET (or MOSFET) was based on thin film semiconductor deposited on glass, and was invented over 25 years before the BJT, in the early 1920s. The first transistor was invented at Bell Laboratories on December 16, 1947 by William Shockley, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain.
The transistor was successfully demonstrated on December 23, 1947 at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey. Bell Labs is the research arm of American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T).

before the invention of transistor, thyristor was used instead of transistor but thyristor produces more heat in the circuit and size is more when compared to transistor
Invention of TransistorThe transistor was invented in December 1947 at Bell Labs, Murray Hill, New Jersey; the patent application wasn't made until early 1948 and some references incorrectly give the invention date as 1948.The transistor was commercialised in small numbers by 1949 but production difficulties delayed its widespread use until the mid 1950s.In 1956 the Bell Labs team of William Shockley, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain were awarded the Nobel Prize in physics; Bardeen went on to win a second physics Nobel in 1972 (for work on superconductivity) - the only person to achieve this feat.
