A volcano is an opening in the Earth's surface through which heated materials (lava, ash, or gas) escape from below the ground.

The stereotypical volcano forms a cone-shaped mountain of solidified magma and ash. But the basic form is a circular crater or caldera, containing a pool from which superheated materials are expelled by pressure from the source below.
