"A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being"
as stated by the World Health Organisation (W.H.O)
Mental health is the emotional and psychology state of your mind.
The World Health Organization defines Mental Health as "... a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community"
Mental health is an important part of a persons well being, and can directly effect physical health.A person who is not in good mental health conditon can many times also have issues with their physical health. Severe depression can cause actual physical ailments.
Mental health refers to a person's emotional and psychological well-being. In this state, a person realizes their maximum potential. It is more than being free from mental illness. Mental health is characterized by self-actualization.
Answer 1 : either you or those around you are unhappy with your behavior.
Answer 2 : People can be ill either because something has gone wrong in their body which is termed a physical health problem (like common cold, flu, Heart disease or cancer) or we may be described as having a mental health problem if we have any form of psychiatric disorder. In practice mental health disorders may be diagnosed as either psychotic or neurotic.
Anyone's mental health basically means the degree to which they are able to cope mentally with life, that means ability to use brain's cognitive and emotional capabilities to function properly in society, and meet the ordinary demands of everyday life. With most people their mental health is described as "good"; that means you are of sound mind. Alternatively if I behave in an inappropriate way I might be diagnosed as having a mental health rather than a physical health problem or illness; if I have a mental health problem that may or may not make me appear weird to people observing me. How I appear all depends on the specific mental health condition I have.
So a mental health professional is somebody who investigates people's overall emotional and psychological condition. He or she may be a Psychologist or aPsychiatrist. Mental health problems which people have can range from from common everyday worries such as your inabiliy to relax due work related stress, through to Anxiety and Depression or a PersonalityDisorder or long term conditions such as Schizophrenia or Bipolar disorder or most seriously Psychosis, which means he or she loses of contact with reality. These are all different kinds of diagnosed mental health disorders or illnesses.
So while a physical health doctor investigating my illness symptoms may decide after examining me that my physical health is good, he may also think I appear to have a mental health problem that needs investigation. So as that is outside his professional expertise, he will refer me to a mental health professional to further investigate what is wrong with me.
So just as somebody with a physical health illness such being diagnosed with a heart condition may be admitted to an ordinary hospital if the physical health professionals consider that appropriate, I may be admitted to a Mental Hospital specializing in the treatment of psychiatric illness if my mental health professional decides, after his investigation and diagnoses of me that is where I need to go to get the specific kind of attention I need for my illness.
Today most admissions to mental health hospitals are for acute psychiatric illness where people may be admitted if they can not cope with life to perhaps remove them from a stressful and harmful home environment. The majority of admissions to Mental Hospitals are voluntary, that meaning the subject knows he needs help for his mental health problem so agrees to be admitted there. But in some cases detention may be deemed necessary under Mental Health legislation if the patient is diagnosed as being dangerous, such as it being considered likely to attempt to kill or rape someone else because of his severe mental health condition.
Alternatively if my mental health professionl diagnoses me with depression or a Personality Disorder because of my reported inappropriate behaviour to others in society, after diagnosing me he may then decide the treatment appropriate for my particular mental health issue is psychotherapy and/or behaviour therapy to train me to modify my behaviour perhaps in conjunction with drug treatment such as anti-depressants or anti-psychotic drugs.
Or if he diagnosed my mental health issue as being severe depression, perhaps because I am suffering from hallucinations and delusions (that is seeing or hearing things that are not really there) because I am suffering from that mental health condition, he may decide I need to be treated with electro-convulsive therapy (electric shocks to induce seizures on my body under general anaesthetic) as best way in my case to address my particular mental health issue. All these issues are part of the very broad subject of what is mental health!
