The Constitution of a country defines government power and establishes the basic structure of the government. Some have a Presidential form of government e.g. The US. Some have a Parliamentary form with a Prime Minister as head of government as in The United Kingdom. Some have a mixed form with both President and Prime Minister sharing power like in France.
The U.S. Constitution is the first law of the land. It establishes the three divisions of government (legislative, executive, juidicial) and defines their powers. It defines the rights and responsibilities of the people, the states, and the federal government. All laws must conform to the basic law laid out in the Constitution.
