The Tang Dynasty is considered the great age of Chinese poetry, with poets like Li Bai and Du Fu. The Complete Tang Poems, also known as the Tang shi sanbai shou, was compiled during the Tang Dynasty and is a collection of around 49,000 poems by over 2,200 poets.

The greatest Chinese poetry was made during the Tang dynasty, the most prominent poets, Wang Wei, Li Bo and Du Fu. However, there were different kinds of verse produced in other periods of great importance as the Tzu poems (written in lines of irregular length as song lyrics), and the Fu poems (a group of parallel couplets of varying lengths. This was the most difficult to achieve due to their complexity.

They were invented in China during the T'ang Dynasty (680-907) during China's Golden Age of poetry.. They are similar to the Rubaiyat or Omar Khayyam and the Japanese Haiku. They were called truncated verse, an out growth of the regulated verse of the earlier period of the T'ang Dynasty.
