Indentured servants were people who volunteered to enter into contract with affluent families saying that they would work for them if the family paid the servants passage to the New World, shelter and food until the contract was fulfilled. During this time they did the same work as slaves, however many were promised land, clothes and tools at the completion of their term in order to allow the servants to succeed in the New World. Once things in Europe settled down and became a stable, promising place to live, the emigration to the New World dramatically dwindled forcing farmers to look elsewhere for their labor source. Slavery on the other hand was something people were forced into, they were kidnapped from Africa and transported throughout Europe and the New World. These people were not promised freedom, in the beginning their freedom could be purchased but that quickly became illegal in order to trap them into work. Unlike indentured servitude, slavery became written into the law and lasted until the end of the Civil War.
