The space race began in 1957, when the soviets launched an artificial satellite. (sputnik I) The United states responded by launching Explorer I in 1958 and later that year, the space program NASA, or National Aeronautics and Space, was created. in 1961, the first human, Yuri Gagarin, was launched into space onboard Vostok I. A month later, the US launched Alan Shepard onboard Fredom 7. in 1962, John Glenn was the first American to orbitthe earth, onboard Friendship 7. Between 1964 and 1972, the United States and the Soviet Union sent space crafts to the moon. On the Eagle spacecraft, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the Sea of Tranquility on July 20th. There they collected samples, or "moon rocks" that helped scientists dicover that the moon was made up of the same minerals as earth. :) hope this is helps.
