Actually speaking electronic data processing doesn't go back more just half a centurti.e. they existence merely 1940's they very first modern electronic computer became operational only in early 1940's. Infact, its only a little morethan just five decades ago since the first modern electronic computer was brought in to existence for the purpose of bussiness data processing. Computer before that were only used in scientific and technological field.
If you think about it the first information technology was cave paintings, then writing was invented first on clay tablets then later on paper or parchment. Once the second world war was over and people started thinking about what computers could be used for besides lobing artillery shells at some then it moved a bit faster than before. First electronic computers were house sized and used the same amount of electricity as a small town but they could do more work in one hour than hundreds of people. These days information technology directed and administered by computers covers a vast range of information it is sometimes difficult to keep track of all the options
Computers originally started out as giang machines that filled entire buildings. These were called mainframes. they consisted of hunderds of tubes which contained a vacuum that allowed electric signals to pass through them easily. After a while, people realzed that magnetic strips could hold data. There came the Tape Drive. The drive was about as large as a vinyl LP and contained very minimal amounts of data.
AFter the tape drive, people were able to shrink the size of the mainframes to a quarter of the size which only used a single room with the same power. The Tape drive became the Floppy which held (at first) 256kb which later evolved into 1.44 Mb. Then came the double sided floppy which held 1.44 Mb on each side (2.88 Mb) The computer shrank even more into the PC (Personal Computer).
Originally, the computer ran a system called MS-DOS (Now also called Command Prompt). the system was based on a series of commands and locations. For example, to delete a file: del c:\user\image.img and many commands were used for different reasons. The ZIP and Jazz drives came out which allowed people to store 100Mb of data. The two main computer companies came to be Microsoft and Macintosh (Apple).
Apple came out with the original 'Operating System' The first ever GUI (Graphical User Interface). Now people didn't have to use commands anymore. THey could point and click. Microsoft later stole the basic design and released 'Windows'.
The Compact Disc came to be and eventually the DVD and now Blu-Ray.
Microsoft and Macintosh (Apple) continue to battle in the corporate world today but it started with Windows 1 and Macintosh.
Today, there are seven primary versions of windows and several precursors (Windows 1-NT). Just like Apple with OS X - OS X 10.4.
Everyday, new ideas and products come off the line and old ones get shelved.

evolution
Evolution is the development of something, widely used to describe how the existence of everything came to be. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution
General-Purpose Main-frame and mini computers,Personal Computers, Client/Server networks,enterprise computersCloud and Mobile Computers
The three terms that describe different types of computers are size use processor speed.
There are many books that describe the theory of evolution. For example, there is a book called Evolution: The Remarkable History of a Scientific Theory.
