1) reabsorb or generate new HCO3-

tubule cells shunt HCO3- into peritubular capillary blood to conserve it

2) excrete HCO3-

type A intercalated cells of the collecting ducts generate new HCO3- ions by secretion/excretion

HCO3- = bicarbonate ion which dissociates into H+

H+ can be made into HCO3-
