Communism EXISTED before WW2. The "Cold War" emerged when man entered the Atomic Age in 1945. The introduction of Atomic Weapons now made it suicide for total war to be conducted. Therefore, it was now a "stand-off." Commonly referred to as a Cold War. Only "limited wars" could now be fought between the Communist World and the Free World; Korean War (1950-1953) & Vietnam War (1961-1975). Limited to the use of CONVENTIONAL WEAPONS ONLY.

∙ 9y agoThe Cold War started with building tensions between the US and the USSR during World War II. As Stalin began to annex more countries and spread communism throughout Eastern Europe, the US began to feel threatened and feared that they would start a war amongst the capitalist nations. The US started an attempt to limit the spread of communism and protect capitalism, which led to a series of passive aggressive and indirectly hostile exchanges between the two nations.

∙ 12y agoTo put it simply, there America had recently emerged as a superpower after the second world war, with the world's largest economy. Russia acknowledged this, but there were huge tensions in their relationship- America had capitalism as their government ploicy wheras russia had communism. Also, Stalin was paranoid that the americans had the atomic bomb,whereas they didn't. To protect himself, Stalin invaded eastern european countries to make sure there was a 'cushion' between them and the western capitalists.
