The Pacific Plate is currently being subducted under the North American Plate. Subduction zones are when one plate is being forced under another at a convergent boundary (where two plates collide). When the Pacific Plate is being subducted under the North American Plate, the crust of the Pacific Plate melts, and creates volcanoes along the edge of the North American Plate. So, the relative motion of the two plates is that they are converging, or moving together.

This same process is happening at the South American and Nazca Plates.
