There are two types of microorganism at work in an activated sludge (modern type) sewage treatment plant. Together they purify the water and produce energy for the plant:

The Aerobes

Aerobic bacteria work on the raw sewage in the presence of oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and more bacteria. Essentially they "burn up" the fecal or organic matter with their metabolic processes. Going into the aerobic chambers the waste water contains fecal matter and dissolved organics. Leaving the area it contains only microbes and water.

The water is separated into clean water and microbes. The water is discharged and the microbes sent off for recycling or disposal.

The Anaerobes

The collected aerobic bacteria are directed into anaerobic (no air) digestors where a colony of anaerobic bacteria live, The anaerobes eat the aerobic bacteria reducing them to methane which is burned to power the plant and an inert organic mass which can be disposed of by incorporation into the soil or incineration

How are micro organisms helpful?

OK, Where do I begin. Microorganisms are helpful in the food industry and in industrial microbiology. It is helpful in the processing of some cheeses, and even some meats. Microorganisms are helpful in sewage treatment, they are helpful in soil fertility, they are helpful in the making of new drugs, they play a role in synthetic chemicals, they play a role in nitrogen fixation, they play a role in beneficial decomposition, and I can go on and on.

How can N be removed from wastewater treatment?

Nitrobacter play an essential role in aquaponics. Nitrosomonas bacteria first convert ammonia into nitrites. Nitrobacter convert the nitrites into nitrates, which are readily absorbed by the plants. Read more at the link below.

What is the Role of environmental microbiology in the society?

microbiology is a discipline with clearer mission and has significance.through the knowledge of microbiology in engineering we can provide safe water and food.as treatment plant are constructed by engineers,so they should have knowledge of microorganisms.

What role do microorganisms play in composting?

Microorganisms will eat the organic material so it is broken down. This also account s to the bad smell.

Is microorganisms is nuisance or necessity?

They are both. Some microorganisms can kill us. But they also play an essential role in our body - so much so that even a HEALTHY person has about 10 microorganisms for every cell.

What are the importance of microorganisms?

Both nitrogen cycle and carbon cycle require microorganisms to fulfill their role. Moreover they also help digestion in the stomach of many animals.
