It can be divided into two phase, the first being from Guru Nanak Dev Ji to Guru Arjan Dev Ji, where Sikhism was more into establishing itself as from Guru Nanak Dev Ji to Guru Arjan Dev Ji presented their teachings, building of Gurudwaras (Sikh place of worship), creating ground work for Sikhs to worship God.By compiling Adi Granth, Guru Arjan Dev Ji gave a separate identity to Sikhs where in they have their own scripture.

The second phase would be after the Martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji. Till Guru Arjan Dev Ji, Sikhism was more peaceful. But after the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, from Guru Hargobind Dev Ji to Guru Gobind Singh Ji Sikhism was more into keeping its identity intact as Sikhs often had to fight many battles with Mughals emperors of India.
