Various companies wanted to create a digital media format that would become the world's standard. This lead to intense competition between VHS and Betamax. As a result there were many different types of video formats and mediums, all incompatible with one another and requiring it's own hardware.
Few years later computer industry experts agreed to create a universal format - the DVD.
