In English, this is known as our Christopher Columbus day but in Mexico is it known as El día de la Raza, or day of the race. Christopher Columbus had a theory that the world was not round, but flat. So as he sailed west from Spain to find a new route to China or the East Indies. He did not find that new route, instead, on October 12, 1492 he and his three ships landed on the Bahamas and from there, he went on to Cuba and Hispaniola. Then he traveled back to Spain to plan another route. When Columbus got the approval and funding, he went back in 1493 with 17 ships and did the same route, he explored Puerto Rico and the Leeward Islands this time and found a colony on Hispaniola. He returned back to Spain after not finding any spices or gold. He made a third journey in 1498 where he explored the coast of Venezuela. He went back to Spain in 1500 in disgrace of not finding any spices or gold. In 1502 he made his final trip back and landed in Costa Rica. He died in 1506, and he is celebrated as the man who opened Central and South America to exploration and colonization, including Mexico.

Day of the Race is celebrated is celebrated throughout most of Mexico and Latin America. This celebrates the many races that are in the history of Mexico, Central America and South America such as the Maya, Aztec, Inca, Spanish, Portuguese, and French.
