You might argue that he did. He held the union together and his army crushed the South, forcing them back into the federal union. The actual total unification of the country probably did not occur until World War I.

He divided the country, and the civil war had nothing to do with slavery its all economics. go and read some information about the north and the south FROM THE NORTH'S PERSPECTIVE. Then go and read some information about the north and south FROM THE SOUTH'S PERSPECTIVE. It will allow you to see allll sides the the story, and from there if you are interested in why the people thought that way. Go and research the politics of the time, so you can finally understand exactly how all those people felt and why they wrote their words down. Then you will see and understand the whole picture, and be able to actually see what happened.

US President Lincoln wanted to reunite the Union and the Confederacy into one nation. After he issued the last version of the Emancipation Proclamation, he knew that the US Constitution would need to be amended to abolish slavery. His hope was that each side in the civil war would see that it was best for everyone, North and South, to heal from the damage the war had caused. Due to his assassination, he never lived to bring this process of healing into reality. The US Congress, dominated by Republicans and the new US President Johnson, a Democrat, could not see eye to eye on this process which became various acts of Reconstruction. It took more than 50 years for the South to recover economically. The bitterness towards the North and to the freed slaves was a factor in this slow process to fully bring the South back to any sort of degree of normality. Politically, the hatred of the South towards Republicans created for decades a situation where the "Solid South" remained a Democrat stronghold.
