Yes, they were the only family on earth, so they had no choice. We can't do it now though, because our genome has so badly degenerated since the original creation, that it would cause some serious defects in the children.
The story of Adam and Eve is not meant to be taken literally. However, for those who do believe it literally happened, they would also believe that G-d created each of them genetically different enough to permit them to have children.
If the account of Adam and Eve in the book of Genesis is to be taken literally, although scientifically speaking it couldn't have been, then the sons and daughters of Adam and Eve would have inbred.
