If not all Africans are black then why do we call African-Americans African American isn't that stereotyping all Africans?

I Personally dont get why blacks are called African-Americans because...For one all black americans are not from AFRICA!!! most of black ppl have more than just african in them...theres asian...european etc..they r not fully africans!!...many africans get offended by this term as well as 'black' americans...there needs to be sum other term made up in the place of "African Americans"...Good one!!!!! I have been asking the same thing forever. Not all blacks are African, so I will never understand it.AIt must be understood that "All Africans are Black and all Blacks are Africans." As long as you are a Blackman you're an African.Yes it is a good question. It started with slavery and the word that began with 'N' was not received well by the blacks. Then they were called 'Blacks' or 'Negros' and then were changed from this to 'African Americans' to try and appease the blacks. The black population have seldom forgotten their roots and most are proud of who they are because their ancestors are from parts of Africa. Thankfully African Americans have come a long way and are actors, attorneys, in the justice system as judges, doctors, in the music business, etc. Still, there are still many poor and suppressed African Americans. In all reality is would be best just to call them Americans and let it be left this way. However, there are some groups that prefer to remind everyone of their heritage and prefer the title 'African American.' I know it's confusing, but today, one can simply ask a black friend how they would like to be referred too and honor them by doing so.

How was Jim crow killed?

Jim Crow was not an actual person. It was the system in the southern United States that kept African Americans from being fully invested as American citizens. Jim Crow was a derisive term for a black man.

What voting change did the Fifteenth Amendment make to the Constitution?

The 15th Amendment to the Constitution granted African American men the right to vote by declaring that the "right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude." Although ratified on February 3, 1870, the promise of the 15th Amendment would not be fully realized for almost a century. Through the use of poll taxes, literacy tests and other means, Southern states were able to effectively disenfranchise African Americans. It would take the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 before the majority of African Americans in the South were registered to vote.

3 ways in which African Americans were discriminated against during the post reconstruction era?

African Americans faced widespread segregation and Jim Crow laws, which enforced racial segregation in public facilities such as schools, transportation, and restaurants. They were subjected to separate and inferior facilities and services compared to white Americans. African Americans were also often denied their voting rights through measures such as poll taxes, literacy tests, and intimidation tactics. This disenfranchisement suppressed their political power and prevented them from participating fully in the democratic process. African Americans were subjected to widespread racial violence and lynching, particularly in the southern states. They were targeted for asserting their rights or challenging white supremacy, leading to a climate of fear and control that further marginalized and oppressed the African American community.

Was the spirit of democracy fully in the states why or why not?

The spirit of democracy was not fully within the states. This is because the Southerners felt the Northerners were too judgmental of their lifestyles and traditions. The South also felt geographically inferior to the big industrial states up North.

What were the relationship between Native Americans and African Americans in the West during the Civil War and Reconstruction?

from ƝɨѕhҠѡe on yahoo answers:In the 1800's -1900's there was little understanding between Native Americans and African Americans.Firstly because generally Native Americans were an unknown population just as they are today, and African Americans were not able to freely form friendships/relationships with people outside their local area/residence. So basically they had very little contact.Secondly anywhere the 3 populations (Black, White and Native) were in close proximity, the White settlers tried to create friction between the Blacks and the Natives. For example in some areas (southern coastal US) Native Americans where paid to recapture runaway slaves. Which they did to prevent their people from being taken by the slave traders. Most people are unaware that there was an active trade in Native Americans slaves in the US. Regiments of African Americans soldiers were used to hunt and kill Native Americans. The Native Americans called them Buffalo Soldiers. The friction was created between the African Americans and Native Americans because the settlers feared if the African Americans and Native Americans united they would outnumber the White settlers and would wipe them out in an uprising. The story of Native Americans protecting African Americans slaves is not entirely true. Historically like today, Native American society did not have the "concept of difference" based on race or skin color. Difference based on skin color is a Euro concept. Tribes often extended tribal hospitality to both African American and White people who chose to reside with the tribe.Secondly the story that Native Americans protected runaway slaves and intermarried was promoted by African Americans to explain why some didn't look fully African American. It was seen as somewhat better to be part Native American than to be part White. That's why today some African Americans believe they have Native American blood, even though DNA has proven only about 2.9% African Americans actually have Native American blood..4 months ago (10-09-2011)
