Great Britain (England) and France controlled and disputed different areas of Canada from the mid-1600's through the formal foundation of Canada as an independent country where the vast majority of the country retained extensive social, political and economic ties to England while the province of Quebec, especially the Montreal region, retained the French language and strong formal political and cultural ties to France. As recently as the 1990's there were attempts by the population of French speaking Quebec citizens to officially (politically) become an independent state, where Canada's formally established political alliance with England would no longer be recognized and the province would become a stand alone society based on the regions historical relationship with France. These succession efforts continue through the current post 2011 time period.

Prior to the first true western US land owners, (American Plains Indian tribes) who were forcefully removed and/or relocated, the lands west of the Mississippi river were informally claimed at various times by both England and France, with neither having been officially recognized post War of 1812, while the majority of the land was purchased from Mexico, which was not being established as US territories prior to becoming recognized US states. The Louisiana Purchase from France by the United States (citation requested) permitted the fairly youthful United States to control access to the Mississippi River and lands west thereof from the Gulf of Mexico north to Canada which permitted the growing US military access to support the continued westward growth of the United States, west to the Pacific Ocean.
