He died as he lived, mindfully, talking with his followers and reminding them that death was a part of life. He last words were something to the effect of: " All compounded things pass away. Buddhists consciously perform their tasks (eating, walking, working, etc) throughout the day mindfully as the Buddha indicated we should and reflect during the day on our actions of body, speech and mind to see where we need to practice harder. In this way we ensure that we are putting the Buddha's teachings into all our activities.

In some scriptures it is said that The Buddha died from eating "bad pork" ["pork" is roughly translated as mushroom. :-)]The Buddha became ill one retreat season many years after he became Enlightened. His followers thougbh he would die, but gained some strength. But then they had to travel... He knew he would die within 3 months. And so eventually he ate a meal comprised of some mushrooms picked from beneth a sandalwood tree. He became violently ill and died a few days afterwards after uttering his last testament.
