Though born into Portuguese nobility, Ferdinand Magellan (1480-1521) was sailing for Spain's King Charles I, having been refused support by Emmanuel I of Portugal. In 1519, Magellan captained the first circumnavigation of the world, but died during the voyage in 1521 while battling natives in the Philippines. Only 1 of his 5 ships and 18 of his 250 men completed the journey back to Spain in 1522.
