After the Finnish War (1808-1809) the eastern half of Sweden was ceded to Russia, thus becoming the Imperial Russian Grand Duchy of Finland. from 1809 till 1917 the Grand Duchy of Finland was ruled by the Tsar in a personal union with Russia. Finland enjoyed a high degree of autonomy.
