Freed slave Frederick Douglas was self educated and was a force for abolition of slavery. He became a well known scholar. Perhaps the best answer to this is that he did not make any major mistakes, however, he avoided a disaster with John Brown. Douglas had been invited by John Brown to his farm in Maryland. He explained his planned slave revolt to Douglas, and asked for his help. Douglas wisely wanted no part of the scheme.
Frederick Douglass was a former slave who played a major role as civil rights activist both before the US Civil War, during it and after the war when the Reconstruction Era followed. His experience as a former slave enabled him to gain sympathy for his cause, and he was very influential int he attainment of rights for African Americans. A great orator, his speeches had a great impact on abolitionists and further inspired them to fight for the freedom and equality of blacks. As an aside, his fame was national. Abolitionists John Brown tried to recruit Douglas for Brown's slave revolt but Douglas advised him against it. In 1864, he attended the ball after Lincoln's second inaugural address.

Major in the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, an all-black regiment which Frederick Douglass helped recruit soldiers for. Lewis Douglass was wounded at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner, on July 18, 1863. He was later discharged from the service by reason of disability.Although a tactical defeat, the Battle of Fort Wagner proved to be a political victory for the Union since the valor of the 54th against hopeless odds proved the worth of black soldiers, and helped to encourage additional recruitment. The Second Battle of Fort Wagner is depicted in the climax of the movie Glory.
Some major influences in Frederick Douglass's life were his experiences as a slave, his interactions with abolitionist leaders like William Lloyd Garrison and John Brown, and his own determination to fight for freedom and equality. He was also inspired by writers such as William Wordsworth and Lord Byron, as well as his work as a lecturer on the anti-slavery circuit.
