The web page listing medal of freedom recipients from 1945 to 1949 seems to be fairly incomplete. All five mentions in 1949 are women. Fritz Zwicky is said to have received this medal in 1949, but there is no mention. There is also no mention of a medal in 1947 for Alex E. S. Green
Fritz Zwicky was born in Varna, Bulgaria, on February 14, 1898 and moved to Switzerland to live with his grandparents when he was a very young child. He was a Swiss citizen even though he lived and worked in the United States of America. He returned to Switzerland later in life during his retirement years, and lived in an estate home near Bern, Switzerland, still returning to the United States to work, remaining professor emeritus at Caltech. Dark matter wasn't "discovered" by any one person or group. In fact it is still hypothetical and there is no solid proof for its existence. Various astronomers inferred the existence of dark matter from what they observed about galaxies and galaxy clusters. It is still very much a mystery and the subject of some serious research.
