Why was George Lazenby in On Her Majesty's Secret Service instead of Sean Connery?

Sean Connery quit the role. George Lazenby got the part, but decided during filming that he could not handle all the attention. The producers did little to promote the film knowing that they would replace him in the next film.

∙ 9y agoThere was apparently much conflict on the set of "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", with Lazenby having strained relationships with director Peter Hunt and Bond Girl and former Avengers star Diana Rigg, as well as the producers. Today he admits he took bad advice, when he announced that he would not be doing any more Bond films.

He was chosen to portray Bond in the first such film, Dr. No , because Dana Broccoli, the wife of producer Albert Broccoli, thought he was the right blend of sexy and muscular.

In the Hulu documentary "Becoming Bond," they go into great detail, as it is an interview about George Lazenby and his life.
He was offered one million and a contract to do 7 Bond films, yet he walked away. These are the reasons, to the extent that I can surmise. He never really wanted yo be an actor; it was haopenschance that he got the role, thus he was not ready for the pressures of fame. He was Australian, and wanted to do things his own way; the studio wanted him to wear certain things, say certain things, and even shave (become Bond to promote the film) and he just did not want to do it.
He did not believe that he would be blacklisted if he were to turn it down (as was threatened) and his agent believed Janes Bond was not going to be enduring (he was the second James Bond afterall) because it was the era of, "make love not war," and all.
I think it was one of the best Bond films, and he was much much better than many of them. It's a shame because he brought a tenderness/empathy to the character (also having to do with the storyline I'm sure) that has been riviled only by Daniel Craig.
