George Washington outlived his stepson, John Parke Custis. His stepson was known to the family as "Jackie". It seems they were very close and spent a lot of time together (huting, etc.) When Jackie died of a fever at age 27, George and Martha informally adopt two of Jackie's four children. One of these children (George's step grandson) was George Washington Parke Custis, who built "Arlington House", which now sits on a hill overlooking Arlington National Cemetery. George Washington's stepgrandchildren built houses in Virginia and Washington,D.C., many of which are still open to the public. (Woodlawn Plantation, Tutor Place, Arlinton House). A great source to read about the Washington family is a book about the personal recollections and memoirs of George Washington Parke Custis. S. Ramirez (New York) December 11, 2010
