As a young man Washington was a British officer during the French and Indian War. He wasn't very successful in the war, but he used his experience to apply for the position of commander of American forces in the revolution. He went to Congress wearing tailor made blue uniform with brass buttons and gold epaulets. He must have cut quite a figure with his height, red hair, and in the uniform.
