No-one deserves to be killed in battle unless they were guilty of horrific crimes against innocent people.
Harold Godwinson was a rich and powerful man who had the backing of most of his peers and he was born in England. He did everything he could to keep the throne including fighting, and beating, an army from Norway which included his brother.
Whether he would have won against William if he hadn't already fought at Stamford Bridge is something which we will never know. As far as is known, Harold didn't do anything to deserve to lose the throne and his only other suitable rival was Edgar, not William.
No as he worked very hard and had a good strong army and he was a good king and kept england in a good order

For the first years of his reign English political life was dominated by Godwin of Wessex, Leofric of Mercia and Siward of Northumbria. Godwin hoped that his daughter would have a son but Edward had taken a vow of celibacy and it soon became clear that the couple would not produce an heir to the throne.
Harold ii (Harold Godwinson) the last Anglo-Saxon King of England, claimed that he had been promised the throne by his predecessor, Edward the Confessor. However, William, Duke of Normandy, made the same claim and was incensed when Harold took the throne. He amassed an army and invaded England in October 1066. Harold and William's armies fought a decisive battle at Senlac Hill (near the town of Hastings) on 14th October where Harold was mortally wounded. William was then crowned King of England and became known as William the Conqueror.
