Yes she did she learned by feeling her teachers mouth. Her first letters were i, q, p, o, and u. She would place her hand on Anne Sullivan's mouth, nose and throat. Then when Anne spoke, Helen would feel the vibrations of Anne's spoken words.

She had a disease that took away her hearing and sight. Yet, Helen Keller did learn to speak, but someone had to translate for her because her voice was not clear. Helen Keller learned to talk by Anne Sullivan. Her first word was water, not really clear. Yet, if you watch the movie and do research you can see that she understood what was being taught to her.
