Herbert Hoover ran against Franklin D. Roosevelt in the presidential election that took place in November of 1932. Hoover was the incumbent President and Roosevelt was the Governor of New York. Roosevelt, the Democratic candidate, won the election.
Herbert Hoover and John Kennedy donated their salaries to charity. George Washington did not want any salary, but he became convinced that serving without pay could set a precedent that would prevent other less wealthy people from accepting the presidency.
He did a lot of things to help out other presidents! He was a very good man and he married Lou Henry. He was born on August 10, 1874 in West Branch, IA. His father "Jessie Hoover" died from a heart attack when Herbert was 6 years old. His mother "Hulda Randall (Minthorn) Hoover" died from pneumonia. His uncle, Dr.John Minthorn ended up raising Herbert. He lived in Oregon. Herbert did not attend high school. Like I said, very good man.
Herbert Hoover defeated the Democrat, Gov. Al Smith of NY in 1928. (There may be other examples.)
