∙ 15y agoNo, he was a runner in the German Army taking messages back and forth from the command staff in the rear to the fighting units near the battlefield. By all accounts he was a brave soldier winning the Iron Cross first class (unusual for foot soldiers), along with 4 other medals, as well his fellow soldiers considered him a 'lucky' man. In October 1918, he was temporarily blinded by a British chlorine gas attack near Ypres. He finished WW1 as a Corporal.
Herman Goering was a WW1 ace. He became the leader of the German Luftwaffe in WW2 and eventually became 2nd in line for Hitler's replacement. If you see a photo of him in full uniform, he wears a Blue Max (Pour le Merite) around his neck, which was awarded for being a WW1 ace.
