. Germany ended WWI bankrupt and starving, with hyper inflation and on the brink of civil war. The terms of the Versailles Treaty meant Germany had to pay massive reparations to France and her allies and the government was forced to levy taxes that beggared an already beggared country. For the working classes this meant massive unemployment that only began to ease towards the end of the 1920's. When the Great Depression began with the Wall Street Crash of 1929 the effect on the German working classes was very limited. They had no stocks and shares and no savings, poverty and unemployment were still high and most lived a hand to mouth existence. Hitler did not create full employment until Germany went to war in 1939, he created instead a shortage of workers by denying work to Jews or to people who were not Aryan enough. WWII ended the Great Depression but only for the USA, Europe had to wait until the mid 1950's
