  1. Garrett AiResearch Corporation designed the Central Air Data Computer (CADC) MP944 microprocessor chipset in 1970 for Grumman Aircraft for the US Navy F14A "TomCat" fighter jet. The chips of the chipset were manufactured by American Microsystems. However this work was classified until 1998, so most computer history texts do not mention it and it had no influence on commercial fourth generation computers.
  2. Intel designed the 4004 microprocessor chipset in 1971 for Busicom a Japanese calculator manufacturer for use in a desktop printing calculator. They also got permission from Busicom to market the chipset (4001 ROM, 4002 RAM, 4003 Shift Register, 4004 CPU) commercially to other companies.
  3. Intel designed the 8008 microprocessor in 1972 for Computer Terminal Corporation (CTC) to implement an instruction set of their design for their Datapoint 2200 programmable terminal. It failed to meet their performance specifications but they got permission to market the chip commercially to other companies.
  4. Other commercial microprocessor chipsets and single chip microprocessors were also developed in the 1969 to 1972 time frame by other companies (e.g. Four-Phase System, Texas Instruments).
