Yes.

After WW2 Britain could no longer afford to support several far flung colonies. As a tool to lead to independence the Federations were created. Jamaica was part of the Federation of the West Indies. When the FWI collapsed some of the Colonies became independent, some of them remained a part of the British Commonwealth.

Jamaica was a catalyst in this failure because:

  • Jamaica was fairly remote from most of the other islands in the Federation, lying several hundred miles to the west.
  • Jamaica's share of the seats in the federal parliament was smaller than its share of the total population of the Federation.
  • It was believed that the smaller islands were draining Jamaica's wealth.
  • Many in Jamaica were upset that Kingston had not been chosen as the federal capital.

There was also Nationalism abound causing more friction in the Parliament.
