Lack of land. Japan is actually a rather small nation consisting of a group of small islands. They don't have a lot of land to bury people. They don't even have enough land to build houses, which is why every Japanese city is crammed with high-rise apartments. Cremation is popular purely because there is no space to bury the dead.

To the original poster- my daughter's pet died- we lived in an area where we could not bury her- she was cremated, and my daughter still has her ashes. When an animal is already dead, it is not cruel.
