Asked in Japan, Burial and Cremation
Why is cremation popular in Japan?
Lack of land. Japan is actually a rather small nation consisting of a group of small islands. They don't have a lot of land to bury people. They don't even have enough land to build houses, which is why every Japanese city is crammed with high-rise apartments. Cremation is popular purely because there is no space to bury the dead.

Are we going to run out of space to bury dead bodies?
Asked in Geography, Japan
What is bad about Japan's geography?
Japan does not have a lot of land. So they cannot build enough homes to support their population. Japan has been building high-rise apartments because of the lack of building space, which is a problem because Japan is at risk from earthquakes and tsunamis. The lack of land also means that the dead cannot be buried because it the land is needed for building, so cremation is the only option in Japan, unless you bury your dead abroad or at sea.
Asked in Animal Life
Is it safe to burn dead animals?
We can't answer your question without a LOT more information. Yes, dead animals are sometimes disposed of by inceneration/ cremation- but there is too much information missing to give you an answer. To the original poster- my daughter's pet died- we lived in an area where we could not bury her- she was cremated, and my daughter still has her ashes. When an animal is already dead, it is not cruel.

Do Mormons bury the dead?
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) do have a tradition of burying the deceased, and encourage burial rather than cremation. However, the Church is worldwide and recognizes that in many nations, burial of the dead is illegal or extremely expensive. The Church does not ban cremation, nor will it discourage a family from following the deceased's desire to be cremated even when burial is a viable option.
