Though it's widely reported in most bio's that Carter resigned his commission in '53 after the death of his father, the real story is that his Naval aspirations was to become CNO at some point, and nuclear submarine command was a good career path. Problem was that Carter failed Admiral Hyman G. Rickover's interview for Engineer Officer, effectively ending any hope he had of commanding a boat, or anything else nuclear for that matter.
