Technically, one of his employees found gold on his property. This event caused many to pour into California thus sparking the Gold Rush.

Incidentally, this also caused Sutter's employees to desert him, his land overrun with squatters, and him bankrupt soon after.

Sutter did not find the gold, but a man who worked for him by the name of John Marshall. At the Columa saw mill Marshall found gold in the traces. Sutter was told and didn't tell anyone, but several months later more was found and the word was out. Sutter knew that there would be thousands of people heading for the area and he was right. He lost everything he had built because of the gold rush.

Sutter was very upset about the finding of gold in his sawmill. He mainly tried to hold on to what he owned and to keep the miners from claiming his land. It didn't work and by the end of the gold rush he had lost every thing he created.

No, it was a man who worked for him at the saw mill. The actual person who found the flakes of gold was John Marshal. Sutter told him not to tell anyone and at first he didn't, but it eventually got out. John Sutter knew that the moment it was known what would happen. He was right.
