The Reformation Calvinists did not believed in free will; they believed that God had already chosen those who were to be saved. One could prove to oneself and others that one was among the chosen by working hard and making lots of money.

Spiritual free-will is a pure gift of the Holy Spirit and is given at the discression of the Holy Spirit alone. The gift of the Holy Spirit is a covenant promise given in the Sacrament of Baptism (universal atonement), regardless of age, infant to adult. God promises to be a guiding force in the life of those baptized in the fullness of God (Holy Trinity).
As original sin or actual sin, attacks our spiritual free-will, our sinful nature can cast out the Holy Spirit from us, as we're the temple where the Holy Spirit dwells, omnipresence of God. The Sacrament of the Altar (vicarious atonement) replenishes a clean spirit within us, or a renewal of our baptism, God's active covenant working towards our benefit, as an outright act of grace.
Dr. Martin Luther taught that God's election is a mystery, but that we should have confidence in his mercy for our benefit. Faith likewise is a gift that is only present where a baptism is also present. Repentance is an act of our knowledge that we are sinners and repentance is key to the Holy Spirit coming into our being and giving us the faith we need to allow God to work through us. We're lost sheep, and God is our shepard who finds us, we don't need to search for him. Lutherans denounce: John Calvin's double-predestination and James Arminain's foreknowledge-predestination. Lutherans teach that we can't obtain the free-will to choose God of our own understanding; but that once we have the gift of free-will given to us, we can then use that free-will to choose not to have any participation in God's grace for us (turn down a gift from God). Lutherans believe you can be among God's elect now and later fall from grace due to a lack of repentance or not utilizing the gifts of the Holy Spirit to carry out preordained works of the Holy Spirit to God's intented benefit for those he has called us to serve.

∙ 15y agoAbsolutely. Lutherans believe that, while God calls us, He does not force us. It requires free will to make the choice to believe in Jesus as one's Lord and Saviour.
