It is hard to understand the mind of Mussolini. In April 1945, the Allies were moving north and the Italian partisans were rising up in arms and rounding up all the Fascists leaders. Mussolini decided to leave Milan and go into the mountains where he thought people would welcome him. As he fled, he discovered that partisans were everywhere looking for him. So he agreed to hide in a German convoy to escape. This convoy was headed towards Brenner Pass in order to leave Italy.

But we don't know if that was the real intention of Mussolini. He may have thought he could find safety with Hitler or in a neutral country. He was captured and executed by the Communist partisans.

Who was the president of Italy during World War 2?

Benito Mussolini was handed power by King Vittorio Emanuele III in October 1922 to avoid civil war. He became the Prime Minister of Italy at that time. Following numerous defeats in WWII, he was stripped of power in July 1943. General Pietro Badoglio took over power in July of 1943, and surrendered to the Allied forces in August.

Who rescued Mussolini and What did they do with him?

A little background info:In 1943, Italy was losing their part in World War II, and by that summer, the Allies had driven Italian forces out of North Africa and even had invaded Sicily. The war was extremely unpopular among Italians- to the point that even Mussolini's Fascist Party turned against him. On July 25, 1943, the King of Italy fired Mussolini and had him arrested. The new Prime Minister soon began negotiations for Italy to switch sides and join the Allies against Germany. In early September, the deal was finalized and Italy officially switched sides- just as the Allies were starting their invasions of Italy itself.Mussolini was rescued from prison a few days afterward. An elite unit of German Fallschirmjäger (paratroopers) led by Major Otto-Harald Mors and special SS commandos led by Captain Otto Skorzeny landed in gliders on the mountain where Mussolini was held. The troops used surprise to overwhelm the Italian guards, and escape with Mussolini without firing a shot. For propaganda reasons, the SS troops and Skorzeny got most of the credit for carrying out the raid. After the successful mission, Mussolini was brought to German territory. Shortly thereafter, the Germans created the "Italian Social Republic" in northern Italy, with Mussolini as its first (and only) ruler. However, Germany was actually in control of it, and did most of the fighting as the war continued.Eventually, as the Allies continued to push the Germans out of Italy, Mussolini decided to try to escape to neutral Switzerland with his girlfriend and a few of his remaining close friends. The group was captured by anti-fascist rebels near the Italian-Swiss border at the end of April 1945. Mussolini and his band were executed, and their bodies were hung at a gas station in Milan. People were able to spit on the bodies and throw things at it, to show how much they hated them.

Why did the Italy leave world war 2?

Italy did not leave World War 2. Italy was forced to be allies with the Axis Forces when they did not want to do this. It was Mussolini who did this. The Italians were forced to fight with the Nazis against the Allied Forces. The Italians wanted to be allied with the Brits and Americans. Eventually, The King of Italy and the Italian populace were able to arrest Mussolini, try him and execute him. They then joined the Allied Forces to defeat the Nazis.

What led to Mussolini's seeking an alliance with Nazi Germany?

Basically, Mussolini had originally disliked Hitler when he took control of Germany, and came close to going to war with Germany in 1934 when Nazis assassinated the dictator who ruled Austria (the Austrian dictator was friends with Mussolini; additionally, Italy didn't want Germany to annex Austria and become too powerful). Although Mussolini disliked Hitler, Hitler greatly admired Mussolini and even tried to copy things that Mussolini had done. However, Italy wanted to build an empire, and picked a fight with Ethiopia, which led to a full invasion. Hitler was the only world leader who expressed support for Italy in their war; all other major countries condemned it. Mussolini finally began to like Hitler; he relented and did not try to stop Hitler from annexing Austria in 1938. Eventually Germany and Japan began working on an alliance that would fight against Communist aggression (Japan lost a very short war against the Soviet Union and wanted allies in case of another war with them). Italy also joined the alliance; eventually Italy and Germany would form the "Pact of Steel", officially bonding the countries together in World War II, which started about four months later.
