A short search of the genealogy web sites turns up a Colonel Josiah Maples who died in Raleigh, TN (today a neighborhood within Memphis) and is buried in Rossville, TN on 09/22/1876. He was married to Mary Ann (Marshall) Maples in 1854. They had seven children.
Many would say bad, as he was a slave-trader, who helped to start the KKK (although he eventually told them to stop their violent activities.) His impact on history is really that he was the best soldier the Confederacy ever produced, and Jefferson Davis confessed that his biggest mistake as Confederate president was not to have promoted Forrest to the highest rank. (The aristocratic Davis did not believe in promoting men of humble origin, who had not been trained at West Point.)

He didn't consider slavery wrong. He owned slaves and had a slave mistress who gave him 6 children.
A slave in ancient Rome could not be freed until he or she had reached the age of thirty. As far as freedom itself was concerned, slaves had money, their "peculium" which they earned from tips, gifts and side jobs. They could buy their freedom once they had saved up their price. They were also freed at the decision of their maser/mistress and many slave were freed in their master's will.A slave in ancient Rome could not be freed until he or she had reached the age of thirty. Obviously, there are no current Confederate generals, but one whose name was in the news recently was Nathan Bedford Forrest, after whom a hgh school was named in Jacksonville, FL. The school board there voted to retain the name, despite controversy over Forrest's pre- Civil War career, which included slave ownership and trading, and post-war involvement with the formation of the Ku Klux Klan. The vote to retain the name was along racial lines, with the only votes to change the name coming from the board's only black members.
that's up to the women not the guy
No. These are the opposite sex, or gender, mistress being the female form of master. The relationship opposite of master is slave.
