I don't think so. He is from Chichiltah NM area. His father was a hataathli, "a Medicine Man". He and the other code talkers trained and developed the code at the Marine Camp Pendleton in California. He served from 1942-45. After the WWII he went to Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence Kansas to finish his high school work. Then he went to University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan to study art on the GI bill . Then the Marine Reserves called him up for two years in Korea from 1950-52. Then he worked 25 he worked at the VA in Albuquerque as a painter. He still lives there and just got his art degree from KU.
