Yes, prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had nine wives when he died. polygamy was normal practice in the early centuries even in Judaism and Christianity and even within their prophets. Jesus; peace be upon him; is an exception. It is enough to mention here that prophet Muhammad remained on marriage with a single wife (that he married with when he was 25 years old) for 25 years (until her death). His marriages afterward were not for pleasures but per God commands to him for religious reasons.

Many narrations point to this being OK. For example, there is an incident narrrated by Salman, a companion of the Prophet Muhammad, that he once visited the house of the Prophet's daughter to ask her a question, and he found her cooking, her face red from the heat of the stove. If women were required to cover their faces, the daughter and wives of Muhammad would have been the first to know and practice this, so it is said that women are allowed to leave their faces uncovered.

There was an attempt at poisoning the prophet (pbuh). It was a Jewish woman from the tribe of Qurayza, after the men had been killed. She attempted to poison the prophet, but she was not successful, even though the prophet had a taste. Once he realized it was poison, he called for her... And asked why she did it. She gave him the reply, " You killed my husband, and my father, if you are a true prophet you would surely have realised it was poison, if you are a fraud, i would have favoured the people by getting rid of you" He then forgave her, and let her free. He died four years later, and as you know.. no poison takes 4 years to kill a man. So he was not poisoned.
It was written once. He memorized every word as it was given to him. The last part... was given to him on his deathbed.
