Liberalism has two meanings, either a commitment to progressive and more expansive government policies OR a commitment to limited government and laissez-faire economic policies. Someone who favor liberalism in the second sense is usually seen to be a conservative, not a liberal.
The 1960 presidential election was the closest election in history. In the popular vote, John F. Kennedy won over Richard Nixon by only 118,550 out of 69 million votes. The electoral vote gave him a majority of 303 to 219, though.
