Richard the Lionheart WAS a crusader. He traveled to the Holy Land after the fall of Jerusalem to Muslim forces commanded by Saladin, who retook the city after the death of King Baldwin II ( the leper King).
Although he fought and led the crusade there for several years there to retake the city, the best he could achieve was a truce between Christians and Muslims.
The movie "Kingdom of Heaven" with Orlando Bloom is based in part on the battle for Jerusalem in which Saladin's forces retook the city from Christian crusaders after Baldwin's death.

Richard I left for the Third Crusade in 1190, but stopped at Sicily and Cyprus and did not arrive in the Holy Lands till June 1191.

The crusaders who were the Peasant crusaders in 1096 and the Noble crusaders in 1097 wanted to re- capture the Holy Land which was important to them, as they were Christians. The Peasant crusaders failed, so the Nobles had to step up and take back the Holy Land.
