The number of Roman gods is unknown and was unknown even to the Romans as there could be a god associated with anything. Moreover, Roman religion kept evolving during its 1,200 years of history. There were archaic gods which fell out of use and whose meaning and function became unknown to the Romans even during their classical period. The number of gods increased over time. There were foreign gods which were adopted from other peoples in Italy and from the Greeks quite early on. With contact with Egypt Isis and Osiris, two Egyptian divinities, were also absorbed. Later during the empire there was a sort of religious engineering in which aspects of Roman divinities were associated with divinities of the conquered peoples and more foreign divinities were absorbed. We know he names of some two hundred Roman gods, but this certainly does not cover the entire Roman pantheon.

Mars-Venus, Apollo-Diana, Vulcan-Vesta, Mercury-Ceres, Divine.

The dii selecti were twenty gods in a list of twenty main divinities: Apollo, Ceres, Diana, Genius, Janus, Jupiter, Juno, Liber, Luna, Mars, Mercury, Minerva, Neptune, Orcus, Saturn, Sol, Tellus, Venus, Vesta and Vulcan
