The workers went home and much of the "little towns" were taken down. There was no need for the project to continue after the war. If you mean who did the most notable scientific research that led to the A-bomb, that would be either Hungarian Leo Szilard or Italian Enrico Fermi. Szilard come up with the idea of a fission chain reaction, organized scientists for the bomb, and convinced Einstein to sign a letter which persuaded President Roosevelt to fund the Manhattan Project. Using Szilard's chain reaction idea, Fermi created Chicago Pile-1, the first nuclear reactor, in 1942. Szilard and Fermi jointly filed for U.S. Patent 2,708,656. The biggest technical barrier to making an A-bomb is enriching uranium rather than the scientific research.
