No, Russia did nothing meaningful in its own defense except retreat and leave scorched earth behind itself. It tested the French at Borodino and then fell back to a position beyond Moscow. The French supply columns were stretched to a point beyond acceptability and as the Russian Winter approached the starving French Army began their long march home.
