St. BRIGID, Patron Saint of Ireland. (Incorrectly known as BRIDGET or BRIGIT).

Answer

Saint Brigid is known as the patron saint of Ireland. Because of the legendary quality of the earliest accounts of her life, there is much debate among many secular scholars and even faithful Christians as to the authenticity of her biographies, so little is really known about her. It is said that Brigid was probably born at Faughart near Dundalk, Louth, Ireland, and that her parents were Dubhthach, a Pagan chieftain of Leinster, and Brocca, a Christian Pict and slave who had been baptised by Saint Patrick. A different account says that that Brigid's father was from Lusitania, kidnapped by Irish pirates and brought to Ireland to work as a slave.

A more likely explanation is that the Christian Saint Brigid was actually based on the Irish deity Brigid, daughter of Dagda. The early Christian missionaries to Ireland created the legend of St. Brigid to deflect Irish faith away from their ancient gods.

There is no historical record or evidence to suggest that Saint Brigid had any children. She is more commonly known for her charity work, founding monasteries, and being a symbol of generosity and compassion.

The answer is not known. Prior to the 12th century, saints were usually canonised by local bishops rather than a formal congregation in Rome. These pre-congregational canonisations were sometimes rather informal and mostly poorly recorded.

As Brigid of Ireland died c. 525 AD and was widely considered a saint in the early Dark Ages, any details of canonisation are unrecorded or else lost, if indeed a formal canonisation was ever performed.

As you may be aware, in 1969 the Catholic Church officially determined that details of several hundred very early saints were too obscure and uncertain to satisfy the modern criteria for congregational canonisation, and they were removed from the list of accepted saints. Brigid was one of these. Note that this does not necessarily mean that these persons were not saints; the Church says that only God makes saints, the canonisation process is for official recognition, and there are undoubtedly tens of thousands of uncanonised saints in heaven. However, considerable doubt has been expressed as to whether Brigid ever existed.

Some say that the Christian Saint Brigid was actually based on the Irish deity Brigid, daughter of Dagda. The early Christian missionaries to Ireland created the legend of St Brigid to deflect Irish faith away from their ancient gods. If so, St Brigid never really existed and thus never married nor had children.

A:

Tradition says that St. Brigid led an exemplary life and was an inspiration to the early Irish Christians. Several miracles have been attributed to Brigid.

A more likely explanation is that the Christian Saint Brigid was actually based on the Irish goddess Brigid, daughter of Dagda. The early Christian missionaries to Ireland created the legend of St. Brigid to deflect Irish faith away from their ancient gods. They were undoubtedly successful in this and sainthood followed, even if the Christian St. Brigid never existed.
