Sir Ernest Shackleton employed the technology of the day in all of his Antarctic treks, between 1901 and 1922.

He used a sextant to navigate at sea and on the Antarctic continent. His trek supplies included weather gauges, barometers, altimeters, and basic survival tools such as camp oil cook stoves and so forth.

By today's standards, his technology was pretty rudimentary.
