He did not join as a soldier. However, In 1219, Francis went to Egypt in an attempt to convert the Sultan to put an end to the conflict of the Crusades. Before that he had been a knight during a dispute with a neighboring town where he was taken prisoner. During his year of imprisonment, he had a conversion and turn his life over to God.
